Chapter 7 First Impression Post

For my first impression post on Chapter 7, I have decided to discuss the second prompt about violent video games.

My prospective on violent video games is fairly neutral. Although I could see why many people could think that violent video games may be one of the causes as to why children are becoming violent as a whole, I think that it may be somewhat unfair to pin the blame solely on the games themselves.

In my opinion, it would be absurd to try and ban violent video games altogether for several different reasons. The first being that it would be unfair for individuals above this certain age range who enjoy playing these certain violent video games. Not only that, but children are already prohibited from buying certain violent games until they reach a certain age. Due to this, I think the blame should be shifted from the developers of the video games, and be placed on the parents and guardians of these children, because without their assistance the children would not be able to get their hands on the games in the first place.

  1. I agree with your perspective on the video game and violence association. I think that children should only be allowed to play violent video games if they are above age twelve. Around this point, the individual enters the formal operations stage so this person has the mental capability to distinguish what is appropriate on a video game and real life. I agree with your point that this should be regulated by parents. From my observation, parents often buy their children video games and movies without checking the age rating. For example, the new popular game Fortnite is rated for people twelve and up, however, I have seen much younger children engaged in this game. In my opinion, there should be more research done before any stricter laws come in place. If there is a substantial correlation to childhood exposure to video games and violence in the future, then stores should ask for an I.D. at the checkout, similar to alcohol sales. For now, parents should be educated on the effects that violent video games may have on children. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
