Chapter 11 First Impression

Stress management is absolutely crucial in most people’s everyday lives. This holds especially true for college students who are often sleep deprived and have to abide by very strict deadlines when it comes to assignments and testing.

To be truthful, during school I do not have a set tactic when it comes to managing my stress levels. I often try to keep a level head when work starts to pile on during the middle of the semester or I am tasked with a large work load. The largest tactic I employ on a regular basis would most likely be stepping back when I start to get stressed, take some deep breaths and break up my schedule in a way that makes it seem like I have less work than what I actually do.

I believe that if I were to incorporate more stress management activities I would most likely incorporate hiking into my schedule. I believe hiking is an extremely good stress management activity because not only are you able to go out and clear your head by surrounding yourself with nature, but the natural beauty of the sights that you see whilst going on hikes can be somewhat soothing as well which may improve your mood as a whole. I think this is an activity I could realistically incorporate into my schedule because you do not have to take an extremely long hike to experience the calming effects, and there are a large amount of interesting trails near Elizabethtown and near my hometown as well.

  1. Your post about stress during the school year is very interesting. Based on the ways you deal with stress, my best guess would be that you experience stress through frustration. My logic behind this is because you like yo take a step back when you get stressed and evaluate the situation as a whole before diving back into it. I feel like this step back is something that allows you to reach your goal, whereas if you didn’t the stress would be preventing you from reaching your goal.
I also really like your idea to add hiking into your schedule to help decrease stress levels. However, I would just suggest that you make sure it does not become maladaptive. You may look at hiking and think how can that ever become maladaptive, but if you think about all of the little problems it can cause, it could very quickly become more of a hassle than a solution. For example, bug bites from hiking could cause irritation that actually make you more stressed. Also, there is the possibility of twisting an ankle or maybe running into some poison ivy by accident that could end your hike in pain rather than pleasure.
Great post and I personally think a great idea to help relieve some stress.

  2. I like how you approach to manage your stress during the school year because I have never thought of taking the small breaks and keeping a clear head to help me focus more. I think this is an interesting way to help manage your stress because most people do something to keep their mind focused on something other than what is causing their stress, but your approach is that you focus on the stress and then figure out the best way to solve your problem.
I think that hiking is such a good idea. I think that most forms of physical activity help a lot of people with the stressers in their lives because it keeps their mind off of the problem and also helps them work off some of the stress while doing an activity that they enjoy. I enjoyed reading this post, it was a great post!

  3. I like how you manage your stress during the school year. I do something similar by taking trips to Turkey Hill when the busy work gets to me. Taking walks is a good way to refocus and think about things while enjoying the weather or watching the animals. Physical activity in any shape or form is a good way to relieve stress. There are very little negatives to physical activity liking hiking. Thank you for sharing a good idea to relieve stress.
