Chapter 12 First Impression

For chapter 12 I decided to take two different IAT tests. I thought these tests were fairly interesting. Although they were very straightforward their results could be skewed very easily if you were just trying to go through as fast as possible, which could make you look biased according to what are outlined in these different tests. I think that this method of testing is very simplistic but very interesting at the same time because it can show the test taker if they tend to have any biases even if they are not actively aware of them.

The results from the first test that I took were very surprising because it stated that I reflected a strong bias one way or another, but after I took the second test it stated that I did not have a bias at all.

I think this test could be very helpful for college students or essentially anyone moving forward in their career. I believe this because I think this test could draw awareness to any individuals biases that they may not even know that they had and they could work on these particular biases.

  1. I also took two of the IAT tests. I believe that they are too simple to be taken seriously. They can easily be skewed by an individual desiring a certain outcome. This could be especially true in the racism test. Most people do not want to be seen as racist, so they would be extra careful when choosing their answers. Aside from my doubts, my results were mostly accurate. The test does detects unintentional bias well through associating two different things with something widely accepted as positive or negative. This was clear when I was taking the meat and vegetable test. As a vegan, it was hard to me to associate meat with something positive. The racism test can detect unconscious patronization. The person may have an easier time linking their own race with positive adjectives. This could be also due to the fact that stereotype is a major factor in prejudice. A person may have had a negative experience with someone of that race, so that person could have unconsciously extended those feelings to everyone of that race.

  2. I did not take the two IAT tests, however based off of what is being said above I think that the IAt tests measures prejudice and based off of that determines stereotype. It sounds like the tests measure the attitudes towards all members of a group to determine a generalized impressions of an entire group.
I feel as though the results of these tests could not only tell stereotyping, but also discrimination. Since there is no power balance or force in play here, I don’t think that oppression would be a result, but since discrimination is treating someone differently based on group status, I think that by deciding stereotypes you could also give examples of discrimination.
I also think that the results of these tests could easily be manipulated by a few seconds of thinking. If someone wants to convince them self that they do not discriminate, the a few seconds of thinking before answering each question could totally skew the results in favor of one way or the other. I do not think that this is necessarily fair to do since the participant would not be completely honest, but it is the risk that comes associated with any participating quiz.

  3. I also took two of the IAT tests and I think that they were very interesting because of the results that they can provide. I think it is very different that they can tell whether or not someone is biased from simply taking two tests. I would think that it is harder to tell online from a test, than it would be from doing a sort of test in person. From taking these tests I got similar results, as I expected, but I am surprised that this can be determined from a simple, online test.
I agree with you saying that this test could be very helpful for college students or essentially anyone moving forward in their career because it could help to see what they are more biased towards and it could also show the place that they will be working what they are more biased towards before they begin their job. I think that these tests were interesting, but they could provide some essential help to both college students and also in future jobs. I enjoyed reading this post, great post!
